afrikaaaabloomsbury Here’s a sneaky peak into what you could expect to see at the Spinster’s School Of Stitchery! The first class takes place this Saturday at Murray Edwards College in Cambridge. Here are 2 of the mood boards I have prepared so far Afrikakakaka and Bloomsbury. These boards are by no means my future trend predictions, just more a collection of things i like to see when creating and crafting! The Spinster’s School of Stitchery shows you how to source inspiration and draw ideas from it to translate into interesting textiles. We then show you how these interesting techniques can be easily achieved and applied to costomise your own garments, accessories, home furnishings, gifts etc etc.

I wanted to send the buyer at Liberty a thank you card for for taking a chance on a new brand and giving me the time and advice needed to develop the range for retail. I knew this card hand to be special. I had to hand make it! I couldn’t be the owner of a sewing brand and send her a shop bought card, sew i set about making this little treat.

Step 1, pick out your fonts on Adobe Illustrator and trace tiny dots of over the top of them, delete the fonts underneath and make the dots coordinate with the colour yarn you are going to stitch them with. Step 2, print out the picture in whatever size you require for your card and using a sharp sewing needle prick little holes through the dots on the paper. Step 3, blue tack the paper to the card you want to sew on and prick through the holes in the paper template all the way through the card layer. Step 4, remove the paper template and using a darning needle big enough for your yarn, sew sew away! Step 5, make a extra special envelope made out of vintage wallpaper, i used Orange Blossom.

IMG00403-20100721-1114IMG00404-20100721-1114It’s been a crazy month! I’m trying to keep you informed more about what i am up to day to day, after all that’s what a blog is meant to be about! I haven’t been able to blog or upload new product for about a month because i have been working my socks of to launch the first Spinster’s Emporium retail range for Liberty!

All the packaging had to be redesigned, little cardboard boxes custom made, my studio was flooded, my assistant left 3 weeks early, the factory that produced the print work was hit by lightening, 800 buttons had to be sewn onto cards in 24hrs! and to top it off i got completely lost in the depths of Manchester trying to deliver to the warehouse ( this was the only point at which i cried). It’s finally gone and should be in store this week and includes our new “Haberdashery Me” DIY  fashion kits, packs of vintage fabrics and vintage button and trimming cards!

You would think theses items would be on sale on this very website?! but that is yet not the case, i have to prepare for teaching my first ever Spinster’s School of Stitchery in Cambridge this Saturday and will not be able to photography and upload new products for another week. For this i am very sorry, but it also gives you something to come back for!

pretty boxes Hello, sorry its been over a week since my last post. Its all go at Spinster’s at the moment, we are hoping to deliver our brand spanking new retail range to Liberty this week, however our packing factory was hit by lightening so there has been a slight delay! We will of course keep you posted as soon as it is available in store and on the Spinster’s website!

I have struggled to update the website with new stock at the moment but we have stacks and stacks of splendid stock already in store. I made these boxes yesterday lined with our vintage wallpapers, these packages are to be laced with Spinster goodies and are being sent to charm buyers and press folk!

Have you ever longed to express your creativity but didn’t knowposter where to start?

The Spinsters Emporium textiles workshop ‘Haberdasher Me’ is designed to inspire and introduce you to traditional techniques with a vintage/contemporary twist.  

Each full day course will be divided into four crafty sections. Learn a variety of techniques such as creative beading patterns, hand embroidery stitches, fabric manipulation methods and appliqué templates. We will show you exciting examples of how these techniques can be applied to personalized garments, home furnishings and gifts.  

All abilities welcome from craft virgins to enthusiasts. We will provide you with all the inspiration, examples, mood boards, colour palettes, vintage fabrics, beads, yarns, buttons, trimmings, equipment and instructions needed for the day’s activities.

Big meetings in the Big Smoke x

12-1 I recently went to London town on some very important meetings. 1st meeting of the day was at Liberty! Spinster’s has been preparing a retail collection of vintage fabrics, buttons, trimmings and fashion customising kits exclusively for the department store, it was a very nerve racking and extremely exciting experience which im pleased to say was successful, more about the new product range over the next few weeks!

Meeting number 2 was with the charming Ben at Jotta,  jotta is an online and offline community for art, design and communication founded in partnership with the University of the Arts London. Ben is the Creative Director and we have met up various times discussing my ever changing  projects and collaboratios with a view to us one day soon working on a event together, watch this space but in the mean time check out the website.

Last but not least was my equally a very exciting lunch with Lu Flux. I fell head over heels in love with Lu’s work when i came across it about 6 months ago, her beautiful originality and traditional techniques make her collections look their worth in gold. Lu and i munched over goats cheese salads and discussed the prospect of exciting collaborations and the possibilty of hosting the Spinster’s School of Stitchery in the Big Smoke. The finishing touch to the perfect day was perusing the shops together and getting snapped wearing our own collections for famous street style blog Coggles.com.
