I always recommend trying these designs out on old or unloved clothes first, that way if it goes wrong you have nothing to lose, and when it goes right, you can wear it proudly and say with a satisfying tone in your voice “I made it myself”.

Step 1: Design
When designing the layout you need to consider a few factors. Think about the order that the doilies have be sewn in, do any over lap at points? Are the edges sturdy enough to sew a zigzag stitch over without damaging them? Which bits are you going to cut out? The great thing a0bout doilies is you can pick them apart in sections. In Fig 1 I have unpicked the both the centre circle and outer frilly edge to use as a collar piece.
2 Lay your doilies down in the centre of the sweater and pin your design in place. I also recommend with all garment projects that you try the sweater on and check the positioning of the doilies on your body.
Step 2: Collar Piece
I have used a frill from a larger doily to create a collar piece for the neckline. 3 Place the frill on the curve of the neckline, flip the frill up and pin it along the neck rib seam. 4 You can see the neck rib seam through the holes in the doily, using the zigzag stitch sew the lace frill into the neck rib seam underneath. 5 When completed, pull the frill back down. The doily collar seam will now be on the inside and a nice neck rib finish on the outside. Steam press the seam and pin the edge of the frill to the sweater, ready to appliqué.
Step 3: Appliqué
Sewing on around the shoulders, neck and sleeves can be difficult, be careful not to over stretch the sweater whilst sewing. 6 Pin the doilies to the sweater around the edges where you intend to sew. Using a medium zigzag stitch, sew the doilies to the sweater. Doilies can be fiddly, the contrast of materials, lacy structures and tight circles can get caught in the presser foot. Take it slow and make sure you remove the pins as you go.
Step 4: Cuffs
I had quite a few doilies and thought they would work well as cuffs. I lay the sleeve flat on the table and fold the doily in half, the doily should be a little bit bigger than the sleeve width to allow for an over lap and seam allowance. When the length of the new sleeve has been decided, cut with fabric scissors. 7 Cut the doily in half, pin it to the new sleeve edge and using a zigzag stitch, sew all the way around, over lapping the doilies where they meet. When finished, pull the doilies down, press the inside seam up into the sleeve and top stitch.
Step 4: Cut
Now for the exciting/scary bit, Jersey fabric rolls when you cut it so don’t worry too much about fraying. Double check the doilies are stitched all the way around the edges and turn the sweater inside out. 8 Using both hands, pull the sweater and the doily apart, with small sharp scissors, snip the centre and cut outwards to the edges in equal segments. When cutting the sweater from the doily, guide you fingers between the doily and sweater, making sure the lacy bits don’t get caught. Leaving a 5mm edge from the zigzag stitch, cut slowly and mind your fingers. Steam press to finish.
Step 5: Embellish
I think finishing details go a long way but less is more here. 9 I have used a simple hand embroidery straight stitch around the outer edges and a petal stitch to emphasize where two doilies meet. I then sewed a simple white pearl bead at the end of each petal stitch.
